INTRODUCTION:
Orolu Local Government was created out of the old Irepodun Local Government on December 14, 1996. Its headquarters is located at Ifon-osun also called Ifon-Orolu or simply Ifon.
The 1991 Population Census outs the population of the area at 83,263. There is however a projection that the population would have hit 5,300 after the recnt national count exercise.
The area is located within a rich agricultural landscape. It shares boundaries with Surulere Local Government in Oyo State, Irepodun, Olorunda and Egbedore Local Government in Osun State.
The history of the local government headquarters is rooted in oral tradition. The town was founded in 1401. The projenitor, Olaosa Aladikun a.k.a Akogun Erujeje, who was descendants of Obatala was said to be living in Ile-Ife . obatala resided at Ideta, one of the aboriginal settlements which made up Ile-Ife before the rise of Oduduwa to prominence. On the order of the family deity, Obalufon-Olaosa was asked to move to where there are palm birds and mushroom in Yoruba means Olu while palm bird is called Eye Iga. Therefore where mushroom and palm bird spread in Yoruba is translated as “Ibi ti olu ati Eye Iga fon ka si”. The name Ofon thus derived from this description.
The Ifon Osun has produced town like Ifon-omima in Ondo State and Igon Sepeteri in Oyo State. There are 225 towns and villages that make up Orolu Local Government Area. |
